My husband"s 30th birthday surprise was a four-day RV drive through California"s tallest Redwoods, and it was our first ever vacation together. It turned out to be prophetic as well, since the independence and novelty of the road generated an idea for our next step that we hadn"t considered before.

Two years later, we were suffocated by San Francisco"s high rent and small apartments, so we bought a 27-foot Winnebago and called her Layla, after the Eric Clapton song my father used to play dordle nonstop during the summers when I was a kid. The plan was to travel throughout the USA and look into potential new locations for us to call home. To operate Layla, a Class A motorhome, you climb into the door of the front cab. It contains a queen-size bed (give or take a few inches), a shotgun kitchen, a dinette, a drop-down bunk above the cab, three TVs, an outside bar area, and two slides that essentially double the space .

The trailer is around 50 square feet in total. Despite its small size, the motor home"s clever layout and the freedom it afforded us made it seem much larger than our 450-square-foot San Francisco apartment. We added a layer of white tile to the existing backsplash in the kitchen and took down the "70s-style window valances to make Layla seem more like home. We also wallpapered the bathroom in a striking red and white pattern, covering 18 square feet. It shows a joyful couple dancing with their dog in a rural oasis that seems like it might be in a desert (another prophetic choice). My father-in-law came all the way from Austin to assist me replace the batteries in Layla so that we could spend more time away from RV park hookups and in the wilderness.

This repair allowed us the freedom to "boondock" (free camp anywhere with no amenities) from national forests and BLM property to Cracker Barrel and Walmart parking lots. When it was time, my husband Brian climbed into the driver"s seat, and I took my place next to him, Layla"s enormous panoramic windshield free of bugs (which would, of course, only last 15 minutes). We embarked on what we imagined would be a year-long trek across the nation with nothing more than the assumption that nature and space would be crucial in our quest.
